It's been awhile since we have done an update, so this will hopefully fill in until we get somewhere with Internet. We arrived at Hiva Oa on May 25 after 29 days at sea. We stayed there for a week and a half then sailed to Tahuata for two days then back to the north side of Hiva Oa for four days. We then did an overnight passage to Ua Pao. When we got there we didn't like the anchorage so we pushed on four hours to Nuku Hiva, where we remained for two weeks.
So far, these stops have all been in the Marqueses Islands, which are tall, mountainous islands where it rains nearly constantly and the anchorages are very rolly from the swell coming in. We got to do a lot of hiking and got LOTS of fruit and bread.
Last Saturday we left the Marqueses Islands for the Tuomotus. These islands are completely the opposite. They are essentially all at sea level, and much drier. The diving and snorkling are excellent, but there is no hiking.
The passage from Nuku Hiva to Kauehi Atoll was the best sailing we have done thus far. We are still hand steering Columbine, but the wind angle for this week-long passage was right and we balanced perfectly and Columbine steered herself at 6-7 kts nearly the entire way. It was sunny and beautiful weather as well.
We are currently anchored at Kauehi Atoll (15°50'S, 145°07'W) and are waiting for some stormy weather to end so we can move on to Fakarava. Right now it's blowing 25-30 kts and raining, but we anticipate sailing this Saturday.
We have gotten a lot of boat projects done in spite of the weather and anchoring conditions. We finished building the hatch for the fuel tank in the cockpit, so hopefully there will be no more water-in-fuel incidents. We have also had a small leak that has been really hard to track down that is finally sealed, so we are once again completely dry inside. We also did some dinghy repairs, worked on the sewing machine, and started replacing the Treadmaster decking material. Our goal is to try to balance the playtime (hiking, touring, snorkeling, etc.) with boat maintenance, repairs, and projects.
Fakarava supposedly has WiFi in the anchorage area, so we will try to post some photos and more in-depth descriptions of our travels thus far.
Update: The weather has moderated, so we plan to depart early morning (7/8) for Fakarava.
